Question: Define motherhood. Answer: Trick question, there is no right answer.  Motherhood has many faces and wears many hats. Yet, if asked, I’ll bet most mothers would agree that of the many roles we play and titles we hold, our favorite- on most days- is that of Mom/Mama/Mami/Mother. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we spoke with eight Colombian creatives about life lessons, good advice, wardrobe lifesavers and the ever elusive balance we seek as working moms.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your children?

That there is nothing more genuine than spontaneity and authenticity. Children are what they are, most adults are what they are not.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

Although we are mothers, we cannot stop investing time in ourselves.

As a creator, what legacy do you want to leave your children?

Commitment and love for our country, our trades and our artisans.

The commitment we must have to care for our planet, as consumers and designers we can do a lot for it.

That anything one believes and visualizes, can be created and manifested.

That keeping our creativity alive brings many benefits, in addition to developing our imagination, it helps us better face the challenges that life brings us.

The secret to finding balance between your career and motherhood?

Feel passion and enjoy the job so that when you are with the children you do not let out frustrations and negative emotions, but on the contrary, the satisfactions of day-to-day work.

To be the “owner” of my time and to be able to take the children to my work.

What’s your philosophy when designing or decorating a home?

All creative processes must start from a clear concept.

What’s on your Mother’s Day wish list?

A photo album of me with the children (they all stay on our cell phones) and a night of camping or “glamping” (haha) with them.

St. DOM FAVORITES:

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your children?

Monkey see, monkey do. If you want them to be good kids, you have to teach them by example… and being a good teacher requires A LOT of patience.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

Everything is temporary, so enjoy every moment.

The secret to finding balance between your career and motherhood?

I don’t know. There are days I work so much I don’t see them, and then there are days I don’t work!

As a mother and entrepreneur, what is one piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

I’m always obsessed with Zéta’s Bianca Pants. They are made of crepe with a little stretch and are super comfortable. They’re ideal for all day wear and for any type of plan. The high-waisted cut is also flattering for the figure.

What’s on your Mother’s Day wish list?

24-36 hours without signal, delicious food and a 90-minute massage

St. DOM FAVORITES:

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your children?

That each one has his own life and the right to live it freely. I’ve also learned that there comes a time when they have as much to teach us as we have them.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

To listen, it is through words that confidence and vulnerability are generated, and allow us to grow as a family.

The secret to finding balance between your career and motherhood?

Understand that it’s not about quantity of time, but quality of time.

As a mother and entrepreneur, what is one piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

A good pair of tennis shoes.

As a creator, what legacy do you want to leave for your children?

Let them know that in creativity they will always find the solution, magic, light and the possibility of becoming the beings that they came to be.

What’s on your wish list for Mother’s Day?

A sourdough bread made by Lorenza, a drawing painted by Ana Perla, a list of songs made by Antonio, and a walk with them where we celebrate the joy of being chosen to be their mom in this life.

St. DOM FAVORITES:

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your son?

Having a child in the middle of a pandemic has not been easy, but Raphaël has taught us to be much more patient and to enjoy every hour we spend together. I am definitely more patient and more tolerant thanks to him.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

Don’t seek so much advice. I think there is a strong instinct that guides each of us to do things our own way. Since my first days of pregnancy, I made the decision to let everything come naturally and spontaneously, without so many rules. My pregnancy went smoothly, and my son is amazing!

As a creator, what legacy do you want to leave your children?

That they dedicate themselves to doing what makes them happy, and that they work well (but not too much) to be able to enjoy life.

The secret to finding balance between your career and motherhood?

Routines! Time management is key to being able to spend time with your son without leaving the workforce. I try to never do both at the same time and I’ll disconnect 100% on weekends to be dedicated to him.

As a mother and entrepreneur, what is one piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?

I’d  like to say a super chic garment, but right now, my uniform is a sweatshirt. Due to the pandemic, we came to live in the countryside so I don’t wear anything but comfortable and loose clothing.

What’s on your Mother’s Day wish list?

May we get out of this confinement quickly and be able to see each other with our family and friends without fear. I also have several Assouline books on my list to complete my travel series collection.

When my son was born, my father advised me to always smile at him.

What’s your philosophy when getting dressed? Does your role as a mom have an influence?

I like to elevate my day and spirits through clothing. I love the moment of dressing up and choosing what to wear every morning, I find it exciting. My style has not changed since becoming a mother except for the shoes, now I wear more flats than before.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

My mom taught me that there are no limits, you can do whatever you want. You just have to believe, talk to the universe and ask that your wishes be fulfilled. I know it works, and I want to teach the same to my kids.

St. DOM FAVORITES:

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your children?

Definitely, live in the moment. Children do not have the baggage that an adult has nor the expectations, which is why they enjoy every moment with true joy and without hard feelings. They know how to seize the moment in a genuine and authentic way, and this is an important lesson for adults who often get stuck in the past and can become negative as a result of their experiences.

The best advice you’ve received as a mother?

Really a VERY practical one. When my eldest son was three years old, we had a serious incident in Cartagena, and the doctor told my husband and I that when we went anywhere, it was important to scan the place for potential hazards to avoid accidents. I have always practiced it since, and it’s been the best advice I’ve received as a mother.

As a creator, what legacy do you want to leave your children?

It’s very important to me that my two sons have the example of a mother who has a life project. Regardless of the job or how successful one may be, for me it is more important they see there is a real commitment, and above all, they know that what I do has a real impact and that it positively affects many people. It also seems important to me they realize that if you can do what you like successfully, you have an advantage, and of course, they understand that it takes a lot of dedication and a lot of work.

The secret to finding balance between your career and motherhood?

I think the secret is to be very efficient with the use of time. Nowadays there are a thousand distractions, and, of course, for many mothers, the phone takes a lot of our time. I usually jump from one application to another like crazy, but I know that to be productive I need to be able to focus. In this way, I can dedicate the necessary hours to my work and then be free for my children. I like to pick them up at school and take them to their activities, do chores together, and spend time doing the things we like. I know it’s not easy, but it’s one of the ways to do it. It has also helped a lot to have a good team at work, where each one fulfills their functions so I can focus on my own, and have more time for my family.

What’s your philosophy when dressing and/or decorating a home? Does your role as a mom have an influence?

I think so because there is an area in my house where I let my children paint the walls. Which actually reverts to question two, because it’s great advice my mom gave me to avoid getting the whole house painted! She told me to leave my children a wall to paint. I think this idea also shows my rather relaxed attitude towards dressing up and decorating my house. I like beautiful and soulful spaces that are cared for with an imposing aesthetic, but at the same time, have a more informal and relaxed side. I understand that the house has to be cared for, as well as my appearance, but I also understand that I still have small children and a balance must be found between the two.

A piece or accessory you can’t live without?

A blazer. Blazers fascinate me, I have many and I never get tired of wearing them because they elevate any outfit, but they also look cute with jeans and tennis shoes. I’ve inherited many from my grandmother, and I love being reminded of her when I wear them! I know it’s a piece that will never go out of style.
